Let’s talk about PrEP

This once daily pill is for peolpe who do not have HIV and wish to protect themselves from HIV/Aids. When taken as prescribed PrEP is high effective in prevending HIV.

What is PrEP?
Pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) is a course of HIV drugs taken by HIV-negative people to reduce their risk of HIV infection.
How effective is PrEP?
If taken correctly and consistently, PrEP is 92%–99% effective in reducing your risk for HIV.
How quickly does PrEP start working?
It’s estimated that it takes at least seven days for PrEP to reach high levels of protection in the body. When used correctly, Truvada for PrEP provides 92%–99% reduction in HIV risk for HIV-negative individuals who take the pills every day as directed.
Once you start using PrEP, do you have to use PrEP forever?
No. You can discontinue using PrEP whenever you decide the protection it offers is no longer necessary, if you experience complications related to PrEP, or if you cannot manage to take a pill daily. However, it is advised that you continue taking PrEP for one month following your last possible exposure to HIV.

If you have all of your necessary lab test results completed, you can get PrEP today. If not, your provider will refer you to a lab for testing before you can get PrEP. After testing, you’ll likely have PrEP in-hand within 3-7 days.

How much does PrEP cost?
Sources vary on the actual cost of PrEP, and the fluctuating health market may mean costs fluctuate. One source suggests that PrEP may cost up to $2,000 a month, while another says it could be about $13,000 per year in out-of-pocket costs. That makes for a fairly expensive drug, on top of frequent visits to your doctor’s office and lab tests.

Thankfully, most insurance providers will offer coverage for at least some part of the costs for PrEP. This is because paying for PrEP medication is often much cheaper than the cost of coverage to treat someone with HIV. If you have insurance, you can expect to pay your usual co-pay for brand name pharmaceuticals.

I don’t have insurance.. can I still get PrEP?
There are programs that might make TRUVADA for PrEP more affordable by offering help with co-pays, medication costs, and insurance costs.

If you’re unable to pay for TRUVADA for PrEP, the Gilead Advancing Access® program may be able to help.

Can I get Truvada for PrEP at low cost or for free?
Yes! If you don’t have insurance, there are ways to get Truvada for PrEP at no or low cost.
